- Lot Description
Sandburg, Carl. REMEMBRANCE ROCK. New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, (1948). First Trade Edition. 8 1/2 by 6 inches in blue cloth with gilt titling to the spine. Columbus artist Emerson Burkhart's copy, signed and inscribed by Sandburg, "Emerson Burkhart with respects and all good wishes Carl Sandburg 1948." Emerson Burkhart (1905-1969) was an American artist based in Columbus, Ohio who befriended Sandburg and painted a portrait of the author which is owned by the National Gallery. Burkhart often "personalized" his books with extensive handwritten comments, notes, memories, and, at times, extensive diary entries and sketches. This book has more than 15 pages at the end filled with the artist's rambling, discursive notes and commentary; as well as extensive annotations in the margins throughout. Burkhart has also sketched a portrait of Sandburg on the page opposite the dedication page and a self-portrait opposite the title page. Housed in a custom blue cloth clamshell box with a printed paper label to the spine.
Condition
Book is worn and the binding has loosened a bit, with the front hinge cracked. The dust jacket is also worn with chipping and loss to the front panel and a closed tear a the bottom of the spine. The custom clamshell is Fine.
