- Lot Description
Tully, Jim. EMMETT LAWLER. New York: Harcourt, Brace & Co., (1922). First Edition. 7 1/2 by 5 1/4 inches in the original yellow printed green cloth covers. The front endpages are filled with Tully's signed inscription to Roy Goble (Leroy Truman Goble) a Chicago advertising writer and "book-person," who died in 1946. The inscription reads, in part, "...with appreciation and the hope that our paths cross often and often again - and may they lead to Schlegl's table - and may Harry Hansen, Sherwood Anderson - and all the others be there - Sincerely, Jim Tully / April 26, 1922." In a laudatory memorial column in the Chicago Tribune after Goble's death in 1946, Harry Hansen described Roy Goble as a great friend of writers and someone who "occasionally ate sauerkraut and pumpernickel at a smoke mellowed restaurant on Wells St. called Schlegl's." This copy of Tully's book is also signed and inscribed by: Harry Hansen ("... a glorious tale of the ringside); Ben Hecht (who offers a crude pencil caricature of Roy Goble); and Sherwood Anderson ("in gratitude for 1 more drink"). In the center of the pastedown is a cartoon/caricature of Tully in orange crayon credited to "G.M." (?) An interesting association copy with strong Chicago connections. ; 315 pages.
