- Lot Description
Spruance, Benton. MOBY DICK - THE PASSION OF AHAB. Barre, Mass.: Barre Publishing, 1968. First Edition. Complete portfolio of 26 folio-size (22 by 16 inches) color lithographs with a separate 40 page text bound in grey wrappers (11 by 16 1/2 inches) in pocket on inside cover of clamshell. The text is by Lawrance Thompson. Benton Murdoch Spruance (1904-1967) was a Philadelphia artist who taught at Beaver College in Glenside, Pa. and also at the Philadelphia College of Art. The color lithographs are striking and they correspond to passages from Moby Dick which are printed in the accompanying booklet.
The plates with just a tiny hint of "bend," or curl at the lower right corners, but otherwise fresh, unmarked and Fine condition. The text booklet by Thompson is Fine. The clamshell shows modest marking/spotting to the upper cover; and the upper cover has pulled away from the case due to the glue drying, which seems to typical with this Barre publication. This last could be fairly easily rectified and the case is otherwise in Very Good condition.Condition
