De Kock, Charles Paul. WORKS, IN 20 VOLUMES. Boston: Quinby Company, 1902-1904. The "St. Louis Exposition Edition," of the novels of this popular 19th Century French novelist, 8vo in a beautiful 3/4 morocco with heavy gilt tooling and decoration in a floral theme with 5 panels and 4 raised bands to the spines. Translated into English by Mary Hanford Ford and Edith Mary Norris. Charles-Paul de Kock (1794-1871), "prolific and immensely popular author of rollicking, risky, or more often frankly coarse, frequently sentimental, and fundamentally good-natured novels. Written with an untiring comic vigour which made up for their complete lack of style, they were also good pictures of the life and amusements of the people in Paris and the country c. 1825-45. They were read and enjoyed in England (by Macaulay and Elizabeth Barrett Browning among others); and at a time when Balzac and G. Sand were exciting interest in France they were more representative of contemporary French fiction for the average English reader than the works of these authors." (The Oxford Companion to French Literature).
