- Lot Description
.58 caliber, 40.5" barrel, bright finish, walnut stock. Two-line Lindsey patent mark at breech, two crisp cartouches on counterpane. A rare rifle based upon Lindsey's superposed loading concept, which worked poorly in the field. Only 1,000 were acquired by the US government, and the only known issuance and combat use was with the 16th Michigan Infantry, who carried them at the battle of Peeble's Farm during the Petersburg Campaign.
Good as restored. The barrel has been stretched approximately 11", using an original US rifle musket barrel, and the forend has been replaced from the rear band forward. The wrist is broken through and has been repaired. The metal has a slightly mottled, lightly oxidized patina. The action remains functional, and the bore is fair, with the rifling not quite lining up where the barrel is stretched. The stock shows minor handling marks in addition to the repairs noted. A good entry level example of a very rare Civil War rifle musket, worthy of a better restoration.Condition
