Albany Evening Journal. Albany, NY: Dawson & Co., April 22, 1865. Vol. 36, No. 10,599. 4pp, 21 x 27.5 in., with black mourning borders.
A rarely encountered, front page report of a synagogue service held on April 19, 1865 in honor of Lincoln, who had developed groundbreaking ties with the Jewish community during his presidency. The "Discourse Delivered by Rev. Dr. Schlesinger, at the Temple of the Congregation 'Anshe Emeth'" offers a powerful tribute to the president, whose loss was mourned at synagogues throughout the nation.
With coverage regarding the assassination, funeral services in Washington, and efforts to raise $100,000 "by one dollar subscriptions, to be presented to Mrs. Lincoln as a token of respect and veneration felt by the people of the departed president." Interior reports discuss the Civil War, including the surrender of General Johnston and Stoneman's Raid as well as a history of the Booth Family.
Wear along perimeter including some loss (right and left edges), some chipping and tears. With modern note taped at center, attached with Scotch tape.
