Liberty Cup, Union Porcelain Works
American (Brooklyn, New York), ca 1877. A white glazed porcelain cup designed by Karl Muller (1820-1887) for Union Porcelain Works, decorated with bisque relief vignettes of Mercury and Justice and having a handle in the form of Liberty atop an eagle, on a round scalloped foot with green underglaze mark; ht. 4, dia. 3.75 in.
The prototype for this cup, an elaborate painted version now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum, was designed by Karl Muller for the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. The meeting of patriotic and Classical symbols captures the proud spirit of the Centennial celebration and the country's foundation of Classical principles.
Small chip in rim. Pock in glaze over figure of Justice. Small hairline in eagle's wing. Underglaze split in porcelain on handle.
