American, 19th century. A plain compass with star and fleur-de-lis decoration to the face, marked Made by Lewis Michael / Somerset, Pa., in a fitted box; overall lg. 15 in., needle lg. 5 in.
Lewis Michael (1762-1852) was born in Wallhalben, Germany. After moving to the United States he completed his apprenticeship with Benjamin Rittenhouse in Pennsylvania and established his business in Somerset, Pennsylvania. This lot is accompanied by extensive biographical information on Michael.
