Lot of approximately 256 items spanning from 1898 until 1933 concerning French aviator, Leon Molon. Items include 37 photographs or real photo postcards of Leon, some of him flying one of his early biplanes, and other early aviation crafts as well as many TLsS and documents addressed to Molon from various aviation companies written entirely in French.
Born to wealthy parents, Leon Molon was able to pursue his passion for speed. Like many early aviators, he began racing automobiles and opened a successful automobile dealership and garage in Le Havre, selling and repairing Renault and Vinot-Déguignand cars. His adept mechanic skills earned him the respect of many including: Issy-les-Moulineaux, Louis Blériot and the Voisin brothers, who often sought his help in developing plane engines.
Molon helped construct the Charles Wilkes biplane in 1909. Deciding to pursue aviation himself, he was the first individual to order one of the new Blériot XIs and was the twenty fifth person in France to obtain his pilots license. He was one of the most active pilots late 1909 and early 1910 and participated in many air races. Hindered by low-performing engines, he did not have any great results in the races. Thus, he retired from racing but continued to help build and develop airplanes. In 1919, after the first World War, he relaunched the Aero Club of Le Havre and served as its president for eleven years.
