The storied Lee and Fendall families of Virginia were closely intertwined through marriage, and both families left an historic legacy in our country. This lot is comprised of an eclectic collection of more than 50 items, including family letters, papers, pamphlets, images, and other ephemera spanning approximately a century. Archive comes from the estate of Virginia Miller (1842-1932), niece of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, granddaughter of Attorney General Charles Lee, and daughter of Dr. Thomas Miller who had an esteemed career as White House doctor to William Henry Harrison as well as to Jefferson Davis.
Highlights of the archive include The Christian Almanac for Maryland and Virginia for the years 1829 and 1830; an 1853 copy of the book Argument of Philip Fendall, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, on the Trial of George A. Gardiner (disbound and without cover); an invitation from Miss Harriet Lane, adopted niece of President James Buchanan and de facto First Lady, to the Misses Millers to attend an event at the White House on October 4, 1860; two letters signed in 1871 by Major Philip Richard Fendall III (1832-1875) discussing the Lee-Fendall family tree; the 1875 Confirmation Book of Alice W. Davis, descendent of Jefferson Davis; a souvenir book dated 1885 from the inauguration ball of President Grover Cleveland; Virginia Miller’s personal copy of the 1894 printed book A Vindication of Arthur Lee; multiple recollections on the life and times of White House physician Dr. Thomas Miller (1806-1873); a 1909 certificate from Lee Birthplace Memorial Committee certifying that Miss Virginia Miller was a contributor to the Lee Birthplace Memorial Fund for the purpose of preserving “Stratford Hall”; and a 1911 pamphlet describing the life of Miss Catherine Ella Jones, missionary to China from 1852-1863.
Images in the collection include 20th century silver gelatin photographs from the Frick Art Reference Library of paintings of Eleanor Lee Fendall (1710-1759) and her husband Benjamin Fendall (1708-1764); a pencil and watercolor mounted reproduction of a black and white portrait of Philip Richard Fendall II (1794-1868); a tarnished ninth plate daguerreotype of an unidentified young boy; a tintype of an unidentified young woman; a CDV of George R. Miller (1846-1872), son of Dr. Thomas and Virginia Jones Miller; an unidentified CDV of a young woman; a cabinet card photograph of Mrs. Matthew Harrison nee Anne Harriot Jones (1822-1894); and a framed early twentieth century photograph of Thomas Miller Fendall (1875-1948).
