The London Chronicle: Or, Universal Evening Post. London: Sold by J. Wilkie, December 3-6, 1757. Vol. II, No. 146. 8pp (pp. 537-544), 8.5 x 11.75 in.
Detailed report of the surrender of British Fort William Henry to French Major General Louis-Joseph de Montcalm during the French and Indian War as depicted in the 1826 James Fenimore Cooper novel and subsequent feature films titled The Last of the Mohicans.
After enduring a difficult siege and with the knowledge that reinforcements would not be coming, British Lieutenant-Colonel George Monro surrendered Fort William Henry to the French in August 1757. However, in one of the most indelible events of the seven-year conflict, American Indian warriors allied with the French violated the terms of surrender and launched an assault on the British column as it departed the fort. The ensuing massacre of British soldiers as well as women and children was met with outrage and, according to this newspaper account, was fueled in part by British soldiers who provided alcohol to the American Indians (p. 542). As proof of these allegations, the newspaper offers a letter from Montcalm to the Earl of London, in which he states, "The honourable Defence made by Lieutenant Monro determined me to grant him and his Garrifon an honourable Capitulation, which would not have been in the leaft infringed, had not your Soldiers given Rum..." Montcalm then goes on to relate the difficulties of controlling "3000 Savage of 33 different Nations," encourages the British to adhere to the terms of the capitulation, and discusses prisoner returns and exchanges. An interesting perspective on a widely known and often depicted event in early American history.
