- Lot Description
Overall dimensions including large wood frame 73" x 53.5". Image is 61" x 41.5". Signed bottom left Michael Schreck 01.
The painting depicts the return of native warriors from the battlefield of the Little Big Horn in 1876. The warriors carry the weapons and equipment of their own cultures, but also American military arms and uniforms. The warrior to the left is Crazy Horse, who is armed with an 1873 Winchester rifle. The warrior with the yellow-painted body is a member of the Tokala Society of Kit-foxes. Black-painted faces were traditional victory signed used by the Plains Indians. The flag is a cavalry guidon, in this case the personal device of George Armstrong Custer, and dated from his Civil War service. The warrior closest to the viewer is armed with a captured .45-70 “trapdoor” Springfield carbine, and is mounted on a horse taken from Tom Custer’s “C” troop. Behind him is the warrior Wooden Leg, who carries the sideburn scalp of Custer’s Adjutant, Lieutenant William W. Cooke. Wooden Leg is also painted half red and yellow, and wears the trousers of a fallen trooper together with the man’s gun belt. The final warrior also rides a captured mount, and bears his own trophy of a cavalryman’s sack coat and hat, with scalps tied to his lance.
