9" clip-point Bowie-style blade, 13.625" overall length. Obverse ricasso marked US, reverse ricasso marked 1900. Brightly polished blade, steel hilt and pommel cap, walnut grip scales. Blued steel scabbard with wire loop hanger. According to Paul Kiesling's Bayonets of the World, a total of 2,800 of these combination bayonet / entrenching tools for the Krag rifle were produced at Springfield Armory in 1900, with 1,500 sent to the Philippines and 500 sent to Cuba for field testing. Most other sources place production at only 2,000 units. The bayonet was a continuation in of the US Ordnance Department's long-standing desire to combine multiple field implements into a single multi-use tool. As most saw service in very harsh, tropical conditions they are rather scarce, particularly in fine or better condition. A very fine example of a scarce Spanish American War-era bayonet and an interesting piece of history from the high point of American "Imperialist" policies.
