The Anvil. Castroville, TX: Friday, August 23, 1895. 4pp, 17.5 x 24 in.
Front page description of the killing of famed outlaw John Wesley Hardin, which reads simply, "John Wesley Hardin the noted Texas desperado, was made to bite the dust, at El Paso on last Monday night. His slayer was constable John Sellman of El Paso."
Gunslinger John Wesley Hardin claimed to have killed more than 40 men in his lifetime, and was perhaps one of the most well-known Texas outlaws. After serving part of a 25-year prison sentence for murder, Hardin eventually moved to El Paso, Texas. It was here on August 19, 1895, that John Sellman shot and killed Hardin as he played cards in the Acme Saloon.
Condition
Pencilled notes appear on newspaper. Loss along vertical edge lines midsection on both left and right some affecting text. Large tear running horizontally on right side above fold line. Toning. Some small tears and holes. Somewhat fragile condition.
