Lot of 8 cartes de visite, featuring an attractive portrait of Lincoln's assassin, John Wilkes Booth, with Joseph Ward's Boston handstamp on verso; seated portrait of Lieutenant General U.S. Grant, credited to Philadelphia Photographic Co.; standing view of General Nathaniel Lyon by Gurney & Son, New York; 4 portraits published by E. & H.T. Anthony from Brady negatives, including General George McClellan, Brigadier General Robert Anderson of Fort Sumter fame, General Philip Kearny, and President James Buchanan. An uncredited studio portrait of a young woman in a military-inspired costume, posing in a provocative manner also accompanies the collection.
Condition
Booth image retains nice, rich tones, top edge trimmed, very fine condition overall. Grant CDV in very fine condition, with slight surface abrasion on lower margin of mount. Light even toning to remaining CDVs. Most retain very good tones, contrast. CDV of young woman with rounded corners.
Breaks and losses to the frames. Minor puckering to one needlework. Fading to background on one.
