- Lot Description
Trumbull, Jonathan, Sr. (1710-1785). Connecticut businessman, French and Indian War regimental leader, and prominent politician who served as both a colonial governor prior to the Revolutionary War and as state governor after independence was won from the British. ANS, 1p, approx. 4.25 x 8.25 in., unknown location. 1756.
Notes written during his time as Colonel of Connecticut's 12th Regiment outlining points to be decided upon for the coming military campaign against the French.
Jonathan Trumbull was the only colonial governor to support the rebel cause at the outset of the Revolutionary War, and was a personal friend of General George Washington. Prior to that, he had held leadership roles in the Connecticut general assembly and in the Connecticut militia. During the French and Indian War, Connecticut played an important role in supplying troops to aid the British cause. Trumbull's handwritten notes concern military matters, specifically filling leadership roles, determining quotas on provincial troops, obtaining provisions and ammunition for the troops, and determining who will bear the expense for the necessary expenditures. He writes, "x To settle, to whom the Chief Command should be given/ x The Quota for Each of the Governments in case any of the Southern or Western Governments fail in their Quota what Quota each of the Governments shall supply. / The way & means for supply of stores of Provisions - & how managed, whether by each separate or before, or whether any or all shall join in it/ x To obtain pay of the Troops, arms, & ammunition & carriages of the Crown/ x At least arms, ammunition, artillery stores & carriage at expense of the Crown."
Condition
Very top portion of document is more heavily toned than the rest of document, dampstaining on upper edge line, and large dampstain on bottom half of document none of which affect readability of text. Horizontal tear commences near bottom right edge line and does pass through some text, however, text remains legible. Penciled date "1756" written on top of document.
