Cheraw Intelligencer and Southern Register. Cheraw, SC: Wm. Poole, & Co., August 24, 1823. Vol. 1, No. 12. 2pp, 13 x 20.25 in. Ink identified in top margin to John Quincy Adams, who was serving as Secretary of State in the Administration of James Monroe at this time.
Future President John Quincy Adams' personal copy of an early southern newspaper providing insight into events in South Carolina during the first quarter of the 19th century.
Although from Massachusetts, Adams would have been extremely cognizant of current events taking place throughout the entire country, including the south. He had recently helped negotiate the acquisition of Florida from Spain. This particular edition of the Cheraw Intelligencer contains items that would generally be expected in a southern newspaper in 1823. A runaway slave named Anthony is sought in one ad. Another notes that a runaway slave named Hance is being held in the Jail at Chesterfield District. Both listings are accompanied by illustrations of runaways.
One curious advertisement, including an illustration of a shoe, promotes "500 pair Negro Shoes for sale, cheap for cash, by J. & J. Coit." Prominent front page advertisements for the Steamboat Maid of Orleans, with illustration, and the Steamboat Yadkin are included as well as promotions for land sales, sheriff sales, brick, salt and iron, cotton bagging, boxes of Orleans Cigars, among other goods.
Likely disbound. Fully separated at central vertical fold. With some light chipping, especially along left edge.
