John E. Weis was born in Indiana but grew up in Cincinnati. He studied, and later taught, at the Art Academy. He was well-traveled, having spent time in Paris with Elizabeth Nourse and John Hopkins, and in various parts of the US, including Taos and the Northeast, Maine in particular. His landscapes surface at auction much more frequently than his portraits, making this work a rarer piece.

At the request of the buyer, Cowan's will authorize the shipment of purchased items. Shipments usually occur within two weeks after payment has been received.
