Sir John Bernard Partridge was born in London to educated parents, and worked as an actor, studied architecture, drapery and ornament, and eventually went on to illustration. He became Punch Magazine's chief cartoonist in 1910, illustrating some hard-hitting World War I political cartoons and propaganda. Partridge was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and the Pastel Society. He also designed some important World War I posters in 1915, many of which are now held at the State Library of Victoria in Melbourne Australia.
