Whitney CDV of Cut Nose, a survivor of the Massacre of 1862 commonly known as the Sioux Uprising. Illustrated in the Minnesota Historical Photo Collectors Group's 2001 publication Joel E. Whitney: Cut Nose #13, Po Go...#59, and Ah Ah...#74.
Whitney, Minnesota's leading pioneer photographer, successfully operated his business in St. Paul during the years 1851-1871. The public liked his cards because, at that time, newspapers did not publish photographs, and people enjoyed carrying images of well-known people, including Indians. The popular cdvs were relatively inexpensive, roughly two dollars each. Whitney sold his studio to Charles Zimmerman in 1871.
