Albumen photograph, 11 x 8.75 in., on 12 x 10.5 in. mount. Title printed below the image, Delegation of Jicarilla Apache Indians, Visiting the Corcoran Gallery of Art, April 2, 1880. The group consists of, left to right: Santiago Largo (James Long), Augustine, Huerito (Little Blond), Dr. Benjamin Thomas, Agent, and Mr. Alex. Read, Interpreter. Photographer unknown.
A delegation of ten Jicarilla Apaches representing approximately 700 Indians were in Washington, DC from March 24 through April 13, 1880.
Huerito was the son of Chief Guerro Mudo. The delegation stayed at the Tremont House, and toured Washington, DC while not engaged in official meetings. One of these visits was to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, which now houses the Renwick Gallery. The purpose of their trip was to have the US government recognize their location in southern New Mexico as a reservation. They did not wish to go to the Mescalero Agency as they feared the whites in that neighborhood would steal everything. The Commissioner of Indian Affairs did not grant their wish, but agreed to send an agent to find a section of agricultural public land in that region where they could be settled.
Even toning. Few fingerprints/smudges along lower margin. Small chip in albumen along right edge (within waterfall painting).
