- Lot Description
CDV-size, cropped example of the classic postmortem portrait of Jesse James, presumably taken in St. Joseph, Missouri on or about April 3, 1882 at the time of James' murder by Robert Ford. James' portrait is surrounded by the following advertisement: "Presented by the Golden Eagle Clothing House / 514 & 516 Main St., Kansas City, Mo."
When James was killed by Ford in St. Joseph, an immediate opportunity opened for enterprising local photographers to capture the famous outlaw after death, and in the case of this rare example, a local clothing company took things a step further by incorporating James' postmortem photograph into its advertisements.
Condition
Moderate toning to print. Some light water staining, mostly along perimeter of mount and visible on mount verso. Slight water stain extending into lower right corner of print.
Repair to base interior.
