Weekly Alta California. A Newspaper for the Miner, the Farmer, the Mechanic, the Merchant, and the Family Circle. San Francisco: Frederick MacCrellish & Co., April 8, 1882. Vol. XXXIV, No. 15. 8pp, 19 x 26 in.
Page 4, column 6 features the report of Jesse James' death, dateline, St. Joseph, MO, April 4th. The article relates that James and his wife had been living in a small house south of the city. Apparently Charles Ford had been living with them since November. Robert Ford came for a visit, but his real purpose seems to have been to capture or kill James. He did the latter, with a single gunshot to the back of the head. Subtitle: "Governor Crittenden in the Plot" relates that Crittenden had made a deal with Bob Ford to give him a quarter of the reward and immunity, but preferred that James be taken alive. Bob had been at the cabin about 10 days, so it appears that he saw no real opportunity to take James alive, and shot him when his back was turned. The Fords immediately surrendered to authorities.
The report gives James' biography: born in 1845, son of a minister, little formal education. At 16 he joined "Quantrill's band of guerrillas, and participated in the butchery at Centralia, and the sacking and burning of Lawrence, Kansas." After the war, they list robberies he is known to have committed, banks, trains, etc. At Northfield, MN, one of his most notorious robberies, a cashier and three of the members of the gang were killed. The paper estimated his robberies netted him about a million dollars.
Overall moderate toning. Some wear at folds. Overall good, with obvious use.
