Handmade broadside, comprised of black paint on yellow paper, 24.75 x 30 in. Official Despatch. Announcing "Jeff Davis was taken at Irwinsville, Ga. on the 10th inst. His family was with him, is now on way to Washington under Strong Guard." Ca May 10-11, 1865.
A one-of-a-kind, hand-painted bulletin relaying breaking news on the capture of Confederate President Jefferson Davis!
A penciled note on reverse indicates that the bulletin was "displayed at Salmon's News Office, cor[ner] Water & Second Sts. Newburgh, NY."
Soon after General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox, Confederate President Jefferson Davis advised members of his cabinet to flee the country. While on the run, a small detachment of the Union Army captured him and his wife outside of Irwinsville, GA. At the time of his capture, Davis wore his wife's raglan, circulating the rumor that he was wearing women's clothing during his escape. The Union captured him and imprisoned him for more than two years at Fortress Monroe. He was never tried because the federal government feared he could prove to a jury that the Southern secession of 1860-1861 was legal.
Separated into 7 separate fragments, with partial separation at fold of largest fragment (in top right corner of broadside). Wear consistent with age and use. Some "ghosting" of text, a result of being folded.
