Janssonius, Joannes. America Septentrionalis. Amsterdam, ca 1636-47. Plate 18.25 x 21.5 in., including margins, 20.5 x 23.75 in. Hand-colored in outline and illustrations. Often cited as the earliest map to illustrate California as an island, and if not the earliest, one of the most widely distributed and influential in perpetuating that view.
Wonderful illustrations of polar bears in the Arctic, along with Arctic fox near Hudson Bay, caribou on the Canadian tundra, and grizzly bear in the northern Rockies (though mountains not yet identified); elk, deer, beaver, bison, rabbit/hare and horses fill in the more southern reaches. The seas are filled with ships pictured from many angles, along with sea monsters, and possibly sea birds near the Grand Banks. One ship plies Hudson Bay, here labeled "Buttons Bay." There is even a tiny dugout canoe with two paddlers off the coast of Florida and the title cartouche is surrounded by native peoples. Only one Great Lake ("Lake Iroquois") is pictured, with a smaller lake also emptying into what would become known as the St. Lawrence (here the "Grand Canadian River"), but projecting fingers of water beyond the lake indicate suspicion that one can navigate beyond this area.
An historically important and wonderfully illustrated early map of North America.
