American, ca 1850. A gimbaled vernier compass, marked James R. Reed & Co. Pittsburgh, Pa. / No. 182; overall lg. 13 in., needle lg. 4.75 in.
James R. Reed (1793-1878) was listed as early as 1816 as a watch and clock maker in Washington, Pennsylvania. He was first listed as a mathematical instrument maker in 1844. He moved to Pittsburgh in 1847 and in 1850 was first listed as James R. Reed & Co.
