- Lot Description
The Sentential of Freedom--Extra. Newark, NJ: December 8, 1848. Vol. LII, Issue No. 21. Printed broadsheet, 2pp, 6.5 x 23 in.
Broadsheet containing James K. Polk's State of the Union address, delivered days earlier, in which he announces the discovery of gold in California. Polk states:
The accounts of the abundance of gold in that territory are of such an extraordinary character as would scarcely command belief were they not corroborated by the authentic reports of officers in the public service'The explorations already made warrant the belief that the supply is very large and that gold is found at various places in an extensive district of country.
Condition
Damp stains on the center fold as well as scattered foxing and toning of the paper. One slight tear on the bottom left margin.
The top of the hinged lid is cracked horizontally and was glued together at one point. The organ appears to have original parts, however some newer screws have been added. The organ plays when the crank is turned, however Cowan's does not guarantee working condition of items at time of purchase.
