- Lot Description
"Mercury" Extra. July 2, [1881], 9 p.m. Newspaper broadside extra, 5.5 x 11 in.
Extra boldly headed, "The Latest! Garfield Dying! No Hope of His Recovery." Accompanied by a series of updates from Washington on the President's health following Charles Guiteau's assassination attempt. The arrest of Guiteau is addressed, as well as his statement of guilt, "I did it. I am a stalwart, and Arthur is now President!"
The last report at 8:50 p.m. notes that "the president [was] quietly resting, but no hopes are now entertained of his recovery." Garfield, however, did recover only to die of an infection due to poor medical practices that September.
Condition
Appears to have been trimmed with some toning of the paper.
