Lot of 4, featuring lightly tinted quarter plate tintype of a Union private seated in a studio setting, housed in full, pressed-paper case decorated on front and back covers with the Illinois state seal. A note tucked behind the tintype indicates that the subject is "Jacob J. White," who served with Co. G, 8th Illinois Cavalry from February 1864-July 1865. Accompanied by a CDV, credited on verso to Gillingham, Fairfax Station, VA, which provides a full standing view of a private leaning on his sword, also identified as Jacob White, although it is difficult to confirm that this is the same Jacob White depicted in the tintype. Additionally, the lot includes a pinfire double action revolver and silk reunion ribbon for the 8th Illinois Cavalry, held in Minneapolis, August 14, 1908, with modern label indicating that the items were owned by Private White.
While Private White's time with the 8th Illinois Cavalry was brief, the regiment served throughout the duration of the war, engaging in a number of major battles, including Antietam, Fredericksburg, Brandy Station, Gettysburg, and many more. Furthermore, the 8th IL Cavalry aided in the hunt for John Wilkes Booth and served as Lincoln's honor guard while he lay in state under the rotunda.
