- Lot Description
Lot of 17 CDVs, of which 7 are identified cartes, most of 58th Indiana Infantry soldiers. Many of the cartes bear the backmark of Louisville, KY photographers J.C. Elrod, Heineman & Flexner, or Smith & Wybrant. The collection also includes CDVs of Union Generals U.S. Grant (2), John Logan, W.T. Sherman, and George Thomas, as well as a memorial view of Abraham Lincoln with Mary Todd Lincoln. Many of the CDVs of 58th IN soldiers are autographed on mount recto or verso, and include the following:
Captain Green McDonald, enlisted as 1st Lt., 10/18/1861, and commissioned into Co. H, 12/16/1861, promoted to Captain, 6/17/1862 (autographed); 1st Lt. Daniel M. Hadlock, enlisted as a Sergeant with Co. C, 11/12/1861, promoted to 2nd Lt., 8/3/1862, and 1st Lt., 10/21/1863, with Smith & Wybrant backmark; 1st Lt. Simon F. Utley, enlisted as a Private, 11/12/1861, and mustered into Co. B, promoted to 2nd Lt. of Co. K after transfer on 2/13/1865, promoted to 1st Lt. 6/28/1865 (autographed); Asst. Surgeon James C. Patten, enlisted as Asst. Surgeon, 4/11/1864, commissioned into Field & Staff two weeks later, by J.C. Elrod; Private Joshua Sowash, Co. C, by J.C. Elrod (autographed); Private Calvin Stiles, Co. H, with Heineman & Flexne backmark; 1st Lt. William F. Ruby, commissioned into Field & Staff, 154th Indiana Infantry, 4/26/1865, promoted to 1st Lt. and Quartermaster the same day, with D.R. Clark, Lafayette, IN backmark (autographed); 3 CDVs of officers, 2 with autographs that are difficult to discern, although one is certainly with the 58th Indiana based on inscription, a view of an unidentified officer credited to J.C. Elrod; and a tintype in paper mount of an unidentified gentleman wearing a wide-brimmed hat.
The 58th Indiana Infantry, which was organized at Princeton and Indianapolis, IN, beginning November 12, mustered in for a three-year enlistment on December 22, 1861. It saw extensive action in the western theater with heavy losses in men and officers before mustering out at Louisville, KY, on July 25, 1865. Engagements included Shiloh, the Siege of Corinth, Stones River, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Missionary Ridge, the Atlanta Campaign, Resaca, Sherman's March to the Sea, and more.
The consignor relates that these CDVs were collected by his Great Uncle, Private Jonathan Cole Fuller, who served with Co. F of the Ohio 25th Infantry from June 20, 1861 through October 18, 1862, when he was discharged for disability.
