Lot of 2. Lassiter, William (d.1924). ALS, 2pp, "[illegible], SD." January 18, 1891. Written to Thornton. A portion reads:
The Indian trouble is over, there may be a few shots fired yet, but the result will not be altered. Two officers and 26 enlisted men have been killed, 4 officers and 41 enlisted men wounded of whom 1 officer and 22 enlisted men have died since of their wounds. Captain Wallace was a classmate of mine and was a fine fellow...a great deal of property has been destroyed by the hostiles, but most of it belonged to the friendly Indians. But the sad bereavement belongs to the nation in the loss of 138 of the noble Red men! From 13,000 men, women, and children have been taken prisoners, and will be turned loose to perpetuate their race.
Included with the letter is a cabinet card of Lassiter in his military uniform stamped on recto by Knaff and Bros., Knoxville, TN, with additional imprint on verso.
Attempting to disarm the Lakota, Major Samuel M. Whitside and the 7th US Cavalry opened fire on a crowd of Lakota men, women, and children at Wounded Knee. The army dug massive graves to bury the 150 men, women, and children killed. Some still crawled out of the pits and walked miles through the snow to safety. William Lassiter was one of many United States soldiers who did not agree with the events at Wounded Knee.
Lassiter graduated from West Point Military Academy in 1873. In addition to serving in the Indian Wars, the most notable portion of his service was in the Spanish-American War. He retired from military service with the rank of colonel, and is buried with honors at Arlington Cemetery.
