United States Army Officer, "Will." ALS, 4pp, 8 x 10 in., "Mouth Niobrara River, DT" (Dakota Territory). June 15, 1866. Written to Jack.
Graphic letter describing American Indians in the Dakota Territory, including the Ponca people and their leader, Chief Iron Whip.
"Give me the negro all the time in preference to brave or squaw," wrote Will to his friend Jack. Will was an officer in the US Army traveling through the American West, charged with protecting forts and settlements in Dakota Territory from returning prisoners. The prisoners were, he mentions, 300 American Indians who were either murderers or participated in the Minnesota Massacre of 1862. While traveling, he described to his friend about prairie dogs, the landscape, and the people in the region. "Their customs are peculiar and I think little of the nasty things," he wrote. "Old Iron Whip their Great Chief is a rough looking scamp." He goes on to complain about their nakedness, laziness, and the assistance the American government provided to them. "Uncle Sam fed the scoundrels so well up thus(?) that they now demand the same of him. They all say they would sooner be back in prison where they get enough to eat. The agent told them they must now work, but they don't like the idea," he wrote. Near the conclusion of the letter he writes of a possible return to Fort Randall, where he will take command of his company.
Folds of the paper, but in excellent condition.
