Independent Chronicle, and the [U]niversal Advertiser. Boston, MA: Nathaniel Willis, April 24, 1783. Vol. XV, No. 585. 4pp. 11 x 17 in. Masthead created by Paul Revere features the banner "Appeal to Heaven" beneath which stands a gentleman soldier holding a sword in his right hand and a scroll in his left hand titled "Independence."
This issue, published after the cessation of hostilities with the British but before the official signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783, contains a great deal of interesting post-conflict content.
The Independent Chronicle and the Universal Advertiser officially started publication in November 1776, however, its multiple precursors of varying names date back to August 1768. The paper's editor and publisher, Nathaniel Willis, had participated in the 1773 Boston Tea Party. A front page article discusses the struggles of integrating Tories back into their communities, "Do not your spirits rise with indignation, your very blood curdle in your veins, at the idea of these wretches whose hands are frill smoaking with the blood of your slaughtered countryman, brothers and fathers, return to live amongst you..." Another front page article recounts the previous week's celebration in Lexington, MA, where the town commemorated the anniversary of the start of the Revolutionary War.
Also of interest are references to the fledgling country's new flag. One section reprints the 1777 Flag Resolution. "Resolved. That the flag of the United States, be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white: That the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation. Charles Thomson, Sec'y."
A separate section providing news from London's House of Commons references a description of "ship's being arrived in the river from America, where she now lay, with the Thirteen stripes at her mast head..."
While another article describes celebrations for "the commencement of the late war at Lexington," that began at 4 a.m. in Boston where the new flag flew over the house of Captain Brown.
Toned with a small mount of foxing. Minor losses and tears along all edge lines. Scotch tape over several larger tears. Scotch tape also in multiple locations along left vertical fold where paper is nearly entirely separated at seam. Very small cutout in a heading on page 3. Note that the "U" in the masthead title "Universal" is missing. Owner's signature inked above masthead.
