.44-77 S caliber, 34.5” half round/half octagonal barrel, S/N 4943. Blued and case hardened finish, deluxe checkered wood stocks, hooded spirit level (glass vial missing) adjustable front sight, adjustable flip-up tang sight with circular eyepiece. Underside of barrel stamped twice “L. L. Hepburn” and also stamped “Mc L” on underside of barrel and on both sides of the buttstock.
Per Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms, Lewis L. Hepburn was Superintendent of Remington’s mechanical department and also a member of the American Creedmoor International Shooting Team. He was also responsible for the design of the famous Remington-Hepburn series of single-shot rifles with their distinctive side-mounted breechblock lever.
This gun is in overall fine condition showing the majority of its original blue on the barrel and the majority of its original case colors on the receiver. The bore is fine, the action is crisp and the markings are very good. The wood stocks are very good to fine overall showing considerable original finish. There are some scattered old slight dings and scratches from storage. The shotgun butt displays a steel buttplate. There are two old holes in the top of the buttstock where a long range sight once resided (sight not included).
A beautiful Rolling Block rifle with signed barrel!
