Cooper, Susan Fenimore. RURAL HOURS. New York: George P. Putnam, 1851. 4th Edition. 8 3/4 by 6 1/4 inches in an elaborately gilt tooled black morocco all around, with raised bands, all edges gilt. Complete with 21 hand-colored lithographs by Endicott -- 15 of birds and 6 of plants. Rural Hours was an enormously popular 19th Century work going through 6 editions over 40 years. It was published anonymously by the daughter of James Fenimore Cooper and in modern times has benefited from a "re-discovery," being called the "first major work of environmental literary nonfiction by an American woman writer, both a source and a rival of Thoreau's Walden." (Johnson, Rochelle, and Daniel Patterson, eds. Susan Fenimore Cooper: New Essays on Rural Hours and Other Works. Athens: University of Georgia Press, 2001.)
