Mrs. Loudon. (Jane Wells Webb Loudon). THE LADIES' FLOWER-GARDEN OF ORNAMENTAL ANNUALS. London: William Smith, 1844. 11 1/4 by 9 inches in a 19th Century gilt pictorial custom binding with the initials, "R.G.C." on the upper cover. xvi, iv, 273 pp. Complete with 48 inserted hand colored and finished color lithographs printed on heavy stock -- of annual flowers for the garden. Mrs. Loudon, or Jane Wells Webb (1807-1858) had published a science fiction novel, "The Mummy," in 1827, which was reviewed in 1829 by John Loudon, already a noted horticulturalist in his own right, and they eventually married.
Binding rebacked with original backstrip laid down; inner hinges reinforced with cloth tape. Binding is rubbed and worn with loss at the corners. The 48 full page delicately hand colored plates are bright and fresh with only 4 or 5 showing modest foxing, primarily in the margins.
