American, 19th century. A framed hand-colored lithograph titled Ice-Boat on the Hudson, titled l.c., credit to Currier and Ives l.l.; 8.5 x 12.75 in. (image), 13.5 x 17.75 in. (sheet).
The sheet was not laid down. It was taped to the mat at top, on the reverse of the sheet, and the tape is still present. There are some condition issues that I was able to see when removing the mat, including a few small losses along the edge, a couple of wormholes in the margins, close to the edges, and areas of foxing. The sheet is toned overall, but it is consistent with the age of the print. There appears to have been some water damage towards the upper left corner, fortunately contained to the top of the margin and not affecting the plate. There is one spot of foxing in the plate towards the lower center. There are a couple of areas where the paper has thinned (probably the result of accidental scratches). One such area is on the front towards the lower center along the edge, underneath the title (which does not appear to have been affected by it). The other area is on the reverse, and visible only from the reverse, towards the center of the right half of the sheet, about 1/4 inch. From the front, the paper is still there with the color intact. It is NOT a hole in the sheet, but an area of thinning that occurred on the reverse.
