- Lot Description
Mariposa Gazette. Mariposa, CA: November 11, 1876. 4pp, 18 x 24 in. Full-page poster printed as part of newspaper, dramatically announcing "Hurrah for Tilden and Hendricks! Our next President and Vice President," featuring woodcut of spread-winged eagle at top with portraits of the Democratic candidates below. With election returns from Mariposa County printed on opposite page.
An exceptionally rare, illustrated newspaper broadside mistakenly declaring the victory of Samuel Tilden and Thomas Hendrick's in the 1876 election, one of the most controversial in American history.
Tilden won the popular vote, however there was a dispute over the electoral college votes in Florida, South Carolina, and Louisiana. The contested electoral votes eventually were awarded to Rutherford B. Hayes, electing him the nineteenth president.
Condition
Light folds, with slight separation along vertical fold passing through broadside, near bottom edge. Small tear near same vertical fold. Very light staining at this fold. Light corner and edge wear to each page.
