Filmer, Sir Robert. PATRIARCHA, OR THE NATURAL POWER OF KINGS. London: Walter Davis, 1680. First Edition. (bound with): FREEHOLDERS GRAND INQUEST...IN DANGEROUS AND DOUBTFUL TIMES. London: Walter Davis, 1679. 7 3/8 by 4 3/4 inches in 1/2 leather and pebble cloth. 2 Volumes in 1, engraved portrait frontis of Charles II restored and laid-down, as well as the first title page; 141; 88 pp. (with additions). Filmer was a leading proponent of divine monarchy; the posthumously published Patriarcha was the most comprehensive exposition of his views. The second work, a collection of writings on political theory and law including essays on Hobbes and Grotius, also reprints his 1653 Advertisement to the Jury-Men of England, touching Witches, urging moderation at witch trials. Preliminary pages restored with linen backing; very early private library (?) shelf label to tail of spine; otherwise complete and in Good condition.
