Henry Rifle Second Model
.44 Henry, 24" barrel, S/N 6853 (mfg. ca 1864). Blued finish, brass frame and buttplate, walnut buttstock. Matching serial numbers on barrel, lower frame tang, buttplate, and in buttstock tang mortise. Screws unnumbered. Two-line barrel address is mostly obscured by replacement elevation adjustable buckhorn rear sight, no dovetail cut in frame. Butt trap in buttplate for cleaning rods that are not present. Slings swivel relocated to toe of butt, sling bar on barrel. Lever lock on triggerplate tang. A salty, mid-Civil War production Henry Rifle that clearly saw post-war use with altered sights.
Good. Retains no original finish, metal cleaned, serial number very weak. Barrel and magazine tube with an unnaturally even brown appearance, with some scattered surface oxidation, light pitting and numerous small impact marks and mars. Lever with streaky applied brown finish. Brass with a medium butterscotch patina, with an extra hole drilled in the upper tang. Mechanically functional, magazine follower and spring replaced, bore good showing moderate pitting and visible rifling. Stock worn, showing numerous bumps, dings and mars, sanded and refinished. A repaired crack is present on the reverse along the upper tang mortise at the frame junction, and a small chip is missing in this area as well. There is a patched repair where the sling swivel was relocated from the reverse butt to the toe of the stock.Condition
