Henry Hammond Extra Deluxe Exhibition Sporting Rifle
.44-77 Sharps caliber, 28" octagonal barrel, no S/N. Top of breech is hand-engraved address: Conn Arms Co Hartford Connecticut Henry Hammond Patent October 25, 1864. Fully engraved in scrolls and stippled background, The breechblock has panels engraved on both sides. Rear barrel sight and front hood sight are engraved. Rear tang sight is engraved on the base and the sides of the tang sight. The staff is graduated on the front of the staff. The disk on the staff is marked Patented Jan 8, 1867. Engraved triggerguard, buttplate, and forearm tip. Engraved border around the front of muzzle. Highly finished flamed walnut stock and forearm. Blued barrel, case colored frame, triggerguard, buttplate and nosecap. Highly blued tang sight.
This rifle was built for the 1876 Philadelphia Exposition and later was used for exhibition in London as this rifle has British proofs on the barrel and frame. This is the only Hammond breechloading rifle we have seen. Also well documented by L.D. Eberhart in a letter to the consignor.
Mr. Eberhart is the author of several publications, including, The Deringer in America Vol. II, of which a signed copy is included with this lot. There is a complete file of research that comes with the rifle. Further included with this archive is an entrance ticket to the 1876 Philadelphia International Exhibition.
Barrel retains most of the original blue just lightly fading. Frame, triggerguard, buttplate and nosecap retain most of the case colors just lightly fading. Stock and forearm have an untouched look still retaining all of the highly finished varnished finish. Bore is excellent. This undoubtedly is one of the finest exhibition-grade single-shot rifles.
