- Lot Description
Clay, Henry (1777-1852). Senator, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Secretary of State, known as the "Great Compromiser." ALS, "H. Clay," 1p, 4.25 x 7 in., framed to 14 x 11.5 in., "Washington." July 9, 1850.
This rare letter was written just two months before Clay's most famous contribution, the Compromise of 1850, was signed. Here, Clay is thanking his supporter, Elias Gates, for a medical book he received as a gift and the "friendly note" that accompanied it. Clay goes on to write, "I tender also my grateful acknowledgments for the friendly sentiments towards me, which you kindly entertain." The lot also includes a CDV of Clay, in full standing pose.
Letter with dark ink, a few spots of discoloration/soiling, and some creasing. CDV portrait with soiling and spots discoloration throughout. Items not examined outside of frame.Condition
