BIRDSALL, James H. 3 1/2 x 2 1/4 in. printed Grand Army of the Republic calling card (light wear to print). Notes that Birdsall served in the 51st New York Volunteer's regimental band as a part of Burnside's Division. Birdall enlisted on 4 October 1861 at Butternuts, NY as a musician. He was commissioned into the band of the 51st NY on 23 October 1861, mustering out on 17 August 1862 in Washington, D.C.

The article continues: "The report that a fight occurred last Tuesday near the canal locks of Elizabeth City, N.C., between Colonel Hawkins' regiment and a force of rebels...Colonel Hawkins was wounded in the right breast, and his Adjutant killed."
