Original publisher's tooled leather-backed blue paper boards (lacking spine, soiling to boards). LIMITED EDITION, NUMBER 472 of 50 copies. DULUTH EDITION. Inscribed to front flyleaf: "To Co. T. Roosevelt with the compliments of the Duluth Progressives. Oct 19,1 1912." A second copy, number 111 of 500, is included with more binding in fine condition.
Mary S. Johnson, widow of the author., helped to organized advance subscriptions among the citizens of Duluth, Minnesota and Emeline (Johnson) Hilton, his daughter, saw The Long Roll published by Roycrofters. Theodore Roosevelt was elected governor of New York in 1899, the veterans of the Hawkins' Zouaves decided to move the Regimental Colors from an Albany firehouse to the State Capitol. On 20 April 1899, accompanied by a parade of 26 veterans, the Battle Flags of the 9th were transferred with Roosevelt in attendance. During his 1912 Presidential campaign, he visited Duluth and gave a speech to the Independent Progressive Party on 10 October, likely when this copy was gifted to the former President. A veteran Lieutenant Graham.

"To Robert Knox Esq. With the Compliments of Clark Wright April 25. 1901." Clark Wright enlisted on 23 April 1861 as a Corporal, mustered in on 4 May 1861 into Co. F of the 9th New York. He was reduced to ranks to private on 22 July 1862 and mustered out with the regiment.
Attributed to John P. Weiss. Enlisted on 23 April 1861 as a private, mustering into Co. F of the 9th NY on 4 May 1861. Wounded in action on 19 April 1862 at Camden, NC. Mustering out with the regiment.
"To My Friend. Herman Walker with the Compliments of James B. Horner." James Horner (b. ca 1840) enlisted on 23 April in New York City as a 1st sergeant, mustering into Co. D of the 9th NY on 4 May 1861. He was promoted twice (2nd lieut. 4/20/1862 of Co. B; 1st lieut. 1/30/1863), mustering out with the regiment.
"To Geo W. Bickelhaupt, from his Comndr and Friend Peter J.L. Searing."
Searing enlisted on 23 April 1861 as a private, mustering in on 4 May 1861 into Co. D. of the 9th New York. He was promoted to corporal on 2 September 1861 and mustered out with the regiment. George Bickelhaupt enlisted on 14 November 1861 as a corporal and was mustered into Co. K of the 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry the same day. He was promoted to sergeant (undated) and mustered out on 14 February 1865.

(Ownership inscription and included letter of recommendation).
Burns (1843-1899) enlisted on 19 April 1861 as a private in New York City. He was mustered into Co. H of the 9th New York on 4 May 1861. He was severely wounded in his right arm in action at Camden, NC on 19 April 1862. He mustered out on 20 May 1863 with the Hawkins' Zouaves, but had subsequent service as a drill instructor in the 4th DC Infantry and was promoted to corporal on 1 February 1864.
McKECHNIE, Robert (b. ca 1836) and RANKIN, Thomas (b. ca 1835). Autograph document signed ("Robt. McKechnie" and "Thomas Rankin"). New York, 18 January 1866. 1 page, 4to, Pension Office stamp to verso, dark spots, heavy creasing with tape repairs to verso. A letter of recommendation for a pension for William Burns by two of his former commanders from Company H of the Hawkins' Zouaves. McKechnie writes at length: " I have always found him to be a prompt, efficient and thoroughly reliable soldier." noting in particular that "he distinguished himself at the Battle of Camden N>C. where he was wounded and at the battle of Antietam his conduct was such as to elicit the admiration not only of his company but of the entire regiment." Rankin endorses his colleague's thoughts: "I am happy to endorse the above in every particular." McKechnie enlisted on 3 May as a sergeant and was mustered into Co. H of the 9th NY. He saw several promotions (1st sergeant 6/10/1861, 2nd lieut. 12/22/1861, and 1st lieut. 3/5/1862) and mustered out with the regiment on 20 May 1863. Rankin enlisted on 3 May 1861 as a corporal, mustering into Co. H of the 9th NY on the next day. He was also promoted (sergeant 6/10/1861 and 1st sergeant 12/22/1861), mustering out with the regiment.

G of the Hawkins' Zouaves (9th NY) the next day. He was twice promoted, to 1st sergeant (undated) and 2nd lieutenant (1 January 1862), and resigned on 30 January 1863.
