.54 caliber, 33" round barrel secured by two barrel bands, nsn. Browned finish, case hardened lock, brass furniture, walnut stock. Lock with standard Harpers Ferry markings and dated 1853. Barrel dated 1852, with usual V / P / Eagle Head and Harpers Ferry WW / P inspection mark. Correct HF buttplate with no "US", correct router pilot holes in patch box. Type IIA long range rear sight with Type IIB 1,000 yard leaf, correct style keyed bayonet lug (missing) and correct iron ramrod. Incorrect Colt style bayonet adapter ring added, with Colt alteration saber bayonet. Period leather sling. Spare cone in patchbox, along with a post-CW modified combination tool and a .69 wiper.
These rifles were modified at Harpers Ferry c1854-55 for use with elongated ball ammunition, by adding long range rear sights and new ramrods. They were also modified to accept a brass handled saber bayonet. Most of this variant were issued to the Fourth & Sixth US Infantry regiments for field testing. Many were further upgraded by re-graduating the sights and adding Type IIB ladders the following year.
