Harlan Hubbard was born in Bellevue, Kentucky, and spent his life in the area, though he and his wife traveled a lot. Most notable, they built a shantyboat and journeyed down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, all the way to the Louisiana bayous. The trip was recorded in Shantyboat and Shantyboat in the bayous, both written by Hubbard. The couple finally settled at Payne Hollow, in Trimble County, Kentucky, where they pursued a lifestyle in harmony with nature. The artist was indeed quite protective of the natural world, and his journal recounts his distrust of industrialization. His pastoral and rural artworks, in oil, watercolor, or woodcut, testify to these values.
