- Lot Description
.38 caliber, 34.625" octagonal barrel, S/N 602. Browned finish, iron frame and mountings, walnut buttstock and forend. Top of barrel stamped Geo. P Foster, Britsol R.I. in script. Left side of frame stamped in three lines: G.P. FOSTER / BRISTOL / R.I. Frame with simple scroll engraving. Double set triggers, fixed rear and blade front sight. Flask shaped patchbox with round door in obverse butt. Wood ramrod.
George Pratt Foster (1810-1874) was a gunmaker who initially worked Taunton, MA (1849-1855), before moving to Rhode Island. He worked in Providence from 1855-1861 and in Bristol from 1861-1867. As this rifle is Bristol marked, we know it was produced between 1861-1867. During his working life received no less than six patents related to firearms designs.
Good. Retains some strong traces of brown with scattered surface oxidation, pinpricking and light pitting. Strongly rifled bore is dirty. Mechanically functional, but triggers may need some adjustment, as the tumbler does not always properly engage the sear. Stock good with some added finish and a chip and crack at the forend tip. Forward ramrod pipe appears to be an old replacement.Condition
