.38 caliber, 34.625" octagonal barrel, S/N 602. Browned finish, iron frame and mountings, walnut buttstock and forend. Top of barrel stamped Geo. P Foster, Britsol R.I. in script. Left side of frame stamped in three lines: G.P. FOSTER / BRISTOL / R.I. Frame with simple scroll engraving. Double set triggers, fixed rear and blade front sight. Flask shaped patchbox with round door in obverse butt. Wood ramrod.
George Pratt Foster (1810-1874) was a gunmaker who initially worked Taunton, MA (1849-1855), before moving to Rhode Island. He worked in Providence from 1855-1861 and in Bristol from 1861-1867. As this rifle is Bristol marked, we know it was produced between 1861-1867. During his working life received no less than six patents related to firearms designs.
