- Lot Description
Half-Horse/Half-Alligator Bowie Knife by Woodhead & Hatley
7.75" blade early-style blade circa 1840-1850, 1.5" wide and 0.225" thick. Overall 13' long. Marked on blade at ricasso on left side Woodhead & Hartley 36 Howard St. Sheffield. Silver coffin-head-shaped butt with half horse and half alligator. Horn slab handles. Red leather sheath in alligator scales style, with silver tip and silver throat. This is truly the classic style Bowie knife.Condition
Pommel has a nice untouched tarnished look. Horn handles are excellent. Escutcheon has a slight dent in it. Blade is mostly grey with some black staining and pitting mixing in. Sharp and clear readable markings. Scabbard is excellent.
