Etching centers on The Cloth Hall in Ypres, Belgium, while people carry on daily business in the street below.
Gustave Fraipont was a renowned painter, sculptor, illustrator, and poster-designer. Though born in Belgium, he became a naturalized French citizen and a professor of drawing at the Maison d'éducation de la Légion d'honneur. He was appointed a Navy painter in 1905 after authoring and illustrating books, creating posters for railway companies, and contributing to French newspapers and magazines. Following major battles, Fraipont depicted scenes of destruction from the Great War for the newspaper L'Illustration, including Ypres in Belgium.
Gaston Boucart was a French painter, etcher, and lithographer. He is most known for his paintings of Venice, in which he utilized bright and bold colors. He also painted French port scenes. Poperinghe (now spelled 'Poperinge'), called "Pops" by British soldiers, was used as a gateway to the battlefields of northern Ypres Salient. Thousands of troops would pass through Poperinge, as it became a hub for the distribution of supplies, rest from duty in trench areas, billeting troops, and even casualty clearing stations. Because of its great use to the Allies, Poperinge was targeted by the Germans and bombed during the Third Battle of Ypres in 1917.
Edward W. Sharland etched and painted landscapes and architectural scenes. His work has been exhibited at the Royal
Academy, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, and others. He drew inspiration for his architectural depictions from his travels through France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Britain, and much of Britain, including his home town of Bristol. The Cloth Hall in Ypres, Belgium was one of his architectural inspirations, dating back to the Middle Ages. It was laid in ruins during World War I, but was later reconstructed to its former glory.
