In the Shadows of Death
watercolor
signed upside lower right, Gunner FJ Mears BEF, title inscribed on back of frame in pencil, "In the Shadows of Death" Looking towards Kemmel Hill
framed, 7.5 x 5 in. (sight)
Depicts dark shadows of soldiers trudging through valley lined with dead trees.
'Gunner' F. J. Mears served as part of the British Expeditionary Force of the Royal Garrison Artillery in Belgium and France during World War I. Mears sought to depict the horrors of warfare from the perspective of a soldier in the trenches. His work, exhibited in London, was purchased by very affluent buyers, including Lady Astor, the Duchess of Norfolk, and Lieutenant General Hubert Gough. It is said that the success of this exhibition saved him and his wife from poverty. A Daily News article from 1920 called Mears an "art genius who paints in a garret..." When asked about his upside-down signature, Mears replied, "The whole of the World is upside down... Why then should my signature only be the right way up?" Some of his work is now held at the Imperial War Museum in London and the World War History and Art Museum in Alliance, Ohio.
